Preview: Mozambique vs. Malawi – prediction, team news

Sports Mole provides an overview of Sunday’s COSAFA Cup clash between Mozambique and Malawi, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Two teams are still awaiting their first clash for the COSAFA Cup victory at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Sunday when Mozambique start working on Malawi.

The teams have collected one point each so far, but neither has reached full speed in the early stages of the competition.

Match preview

Malawi kicked each other after giving up a two-goal advantage in a 1-1 draw with Zimbabwe on Friday.

Objectives of Khuda Muyaba and Schumacher Kumali had put Bob mpinganjirathe men of the box, but they were pushed back in the last 20 minutes of the match thanks to the goals of Sarupinda Blessing and Ben Musaka.

The Flames sit fourth in Group B as it stands, with a game in hand against three of the other five in the group.

Sunday’s match in Port Elizabeth is the third COSAFA Cup meeting between the teams in the last six editions of the tournament.

A quarter-final match in 2015, won by Mozambique on penalties, preceded a group stage match four years later, which ended in a draw.

Mozambique need to regain strength after a narrow 1-0 loss to Senegal in their second Group B game on Friday.

Horacio Gonçalvess’s men were tied before the break, but they were eventually defeated by a Pope Massar Djitte strike just past the hour.

Os Mambas were unable to add a hard-won point on Wednesday thanks to an impressive 0-0 draw against Zimbabwe.

As their third outing on Sunday approaches, they are gradually entering the last chance lounge if they want to avoid a second straight outing in the first round.

Team news

With his first game against Zimbabwe, Khuda Muyaba opened his account for Malawi, and he hopes it will be the first of many to come.

Like Muyaba, 25-year-old Schumacher Kuwali also scored his first senior national team goal in the aforementioned match.

After seeing his side fail to find the back of the net for the second game in a row, Horacio Gonçalves could consider making some changes to his attack.

Vitinho could finally get the chance to impress from the start after back-to-back appearances off the bench in the last two games.

Possible starting composition in Mozambique:
Ernan; Muze, Martinho, Simbane, Cigano; Macaime, Salas, Shaquille; Telinho, Novela, Melito

Possible starting eleven in Malawi:
Kakhobwe; Sanudi, Nyasulu, Kawonga, Mwale; Idana, Mkwate, Selemani; Muyaba, Harrison, Davie

We say: Mozambique 1-1 Malawi

Both teams haven’t really started yet but still have enough to serve a decent competition. While a point doesn’t necessarily do either side a favor, losing just isn’t an option. On that note, we’re backing a share of the loot with goals at both ends.
