The Tanzanian authorities in Zanzibar on Saturday launched a research project aimed at improving the use of medicinal plants as an alternative remedy for noncommunicable diseases.

Research will also focus on adding value to herbal medicines through manufacturing processes and marketing.

“The research and development of herbal medicines is timely and vital in the context of the global increase in communicable and non-communicable diseases,” said Amour Suleiman Mohamed, director of medical services for Zanzibar at the Ministry of Health, from Social Protection, Gender, Elderly and Children when he launched the project.

The two-year project will be undertaken by scientific researchers from the Zanzibar Institute for Health Research and the National Institute for Medical Research, overseen by the Zanzibar Planning Commission and will be funded by the Tanzania Commission for Science and Technology. technology.

Mohamed called for the need to improve and promote herbal medicines, saying many people still depend on them for treatment.

He said the project will initially focus on herbs that can treat asthma, diabetes, and high blood pressure.

He said that the proper cultivation, maintenance and preservation, harvesting, processing, storage, packaging of the medicinal and aromatic plant industry should be standardized to meet the certification criteria for herbal medicines. plants.

Mohamed proposed that Zanzibar have in the near future an institute of traditional and herbal medicine to conduct research, training and production of high quality medicinal plants.
