Nigeria’s senior women’s national basketball team, D’Tigress, began their campaign for the 2021 FIBA AfroBasket Women’s Championship with a victory over Mozambique on Saturday in Yaoundé, Cameroon.
The Nigerian team survived an early scare to beat Mozambique 67-50 in their first Group B encounter at the Women’s AfroBasket.
Ezinne Kalu scored the best with 17 points, team captain Adara Elonu also impressed, scoring 13.
Nigeria is in Group B alongside Mozambique and Angola, with Group A hosting Cameroon, Cape Verde and Kenya.
The team will now face Angola on Monday to stay ahead of their group.
Over the past four years, the team has grown into Africa’s most successful team with back-to-back AfroBasket titles won in 2017 and 2019.
The 2021 AfroBasket Women’s Championship, which is the 25th edition of the tournament, will be held from September 18 to 26 in Yaoundé.
Four group winners will advance to the quarter-finals, with the remaining eight teams playing for the remaining four tickets to the quarter-finals.
The top two teams from the tournament will advance to one of the qualifying tournaments for the 2022 FIBA Women’s World Cup.
